Invasion of the 'journal snatchers': the firms that buy science publications and turn them rogue

Invasion of the journal snatchers: How indexed journals are falling into questionable hands

Description

In recent years, a substantial number of established journals have received buyout offers from obscure entities, with some journals being acquired. Despite mounting circumstantial evidence of irregular behaviour exhibited by these journals post-acquisition, comprehensive analyses on this matter are lacking. To address this gap, this article examines the practices of Oxbridge Publishing House Ltd., a company registered in the UK in 2022. Through an analysis of publicly available documentation, it becomes apparent that this entity is part of a complex network of recently established companies. Since 2020 this network has acquired, with the help of intermediary firms, at least 36 scholarly journals originally published in countries such as Spain (7), United Kingdom (7), USA (5), India (4), Turkey (4), among others. Targeting journals indexed in prestigious scientific databases like Web of Science and Scopus, many of these journals see significant transformations upon acquisition, such as the introduction or substantial escalation of publication fees, often coupled with increases in publication volumes. This increase stems from a surge in contributions originating outside the journal’s original academic community. Their disregard for proper publishing standards is evident in their widespread use of fake DOIs or the appropriation of DOIs from unrelated documents. Drawing parallels to the film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, we refer to journals caught in this predicament as pod journals. This type of predatory publishing practice not only contributes to over-publication but also disenfranchises legitimate academic communities and poses a threat to academic bibliodiversity.

Springer Nature profits up 7 per cent to €512 million for 2024

Springer Nature has announced its results for the financial year 2024. Revenue was €1,847 million, representing, on an underlying[1] basis, a 5% increase over the same period in 2023. Adjusted operating profit increased to €512 million, equating to underlying[1] growth of 7%.

Frank Vrancken Peeters, CEO of Springer Nature, said: “Our strong results demonstrate our ability to consistently deliver value for our communities while driving innovation in the academic publishing industry. We publish an ever-increasing amount of high-quality open access content and invest in technology and people to ensure we consistently outperform the market while growing responsibly and sustainably.”

Springer Nature says the research segment continues to be the main driver of its growth. Research saw a 6% underlying[3] revenue growth to €1,414 million, primarily due to the performance of the OA Journals portfolio. The company published 50% of its primary research articles OA for the first time.

The education segment supported overall growth, with revenue increasing 3% on an underlying[3] basis to €235 million. This was driven by strong sales in India and South Africa. The health segment’s revenue was €188 million, which was broadly stable on an underlying[3] basis compared to the previous year.

A decline in advertising revenue due to cautious spending from the pharma industry and the impact of changes in German health insurance legislation was offset by strong revenue growth in Cureus.

Springer Nature says it continued to make significant investments in technology and AI to improve and accelerate the publishing process and ensure that the research it publishes is robust and can be trusted. In 2024, technology-related investments totalled €177 million.

Alexandra Dambeck, CFO of Springer Nature, said: “We are pleased with our business and financial performance in 2024, which reflects our strategic focus on high-growth areas and operational efficiency. Our strong free cash flow and reduced financial leverage position us well for future growth and continued investment in innovation for our communities.”

On the basis of Springer Nature’s underlying performance in 2024 and updated foreign currency rates, the company says revenue for 2025 is expected in the range of €1,885 million to €1,935 million[2] and the adjusted operating profit margin at least at the level of 2024.

[1] Underlying change excludes effects from year-on-year changes in foreign currencies and portfolio. In reported terms, 2023 revenue was €1,853 million and adjusted operating profit was €511 million.

[2] Guidance compares with an underlying revenue figure of €1,835 million for 2024.

[3] Underlying change excludes effects from year-on-year changes in foreign currencies and portfolio.

Springer Nature adds new research integrity AI tool

A new AI tool to identify irrelevant references in submitted manuscripts has been launched across Springer Nature’s journals and books.  The tool is the latest AI-driven tool that has been developed in-house at Springer Nature to weed out problematic submissions and ensure the veracity of the publication record.

The tool will be used by Springer Nature’s Research Integrity Group (RIG) to assess submissions to almost all journals and books published by Springer Nature, analysing the relevance of each reference used. If a number of references are identified as irrelevant, the submission will be flagged to RIG who will manually check the manuscript and decide whether the submission should be withdrawn.

The irrelevant reference checker tool has undergone multiple rounds of testing and validation to ensure it provides a precise and reliable assessment of references across academic disciplines, and training and development of the tool will be ongoing.  Human oversight will always remain in place, in line with Springer Nature’s AI Principles.

Chris Graf, Director of Research Integrity at Springer Nature, commented: “As the use of AI to generate fake research papers becomes more effective, reference checking provides a key opportunity to identify these unethical efforts.  The addition of this tool to our existing checks will help us to catch many unethical submissions that would otherwise progress to take up editors’ and peer reviewers’ time.”

The launch of the irrelevant reference checker tool comes just ten months after the launch of two other AI tools to detect problematic submissions that Springer Nature has developed in-house.  The first, Geppetto, supports the identification of papers that contain AI-generated fake content, the second, SnappShot, those that contain problematic images.

Graf added: “Fake research is a challenge that affects the entire publishing industry and is something that Springer Nature will not tolerate.  From creating AI tools, to building a now 50-strong expert research integrity unit, to developing our employees’ and editors’ expertise through training, we are absolutely committed to ensuring the robustness of published research for researchers to build upon.”
