Journal Web Page Comments: “Heliyon is an all-science, open access journal that is part of the Cell Press family. Any paper reporting scientifically accurate and valuable research, which adheres to accepted ethical and scientific publishing standards, will be considered for publication. Our growing team of dedicated section editors, along with our in-house team, handle your paper and manage the publication process end-to-end, giving your research the editorial support it deserves.”

AJR comments: We suggest you use APA edition 7 at submission. Heliyon also requires you to provide the names of experts to review your paper. The submission and tracking system does not allow direct contact with your paper’s editor, only Elsevier’s support staff. This is a big negative with this journal as reviews are now dragging into the months, with authors having no easy, direct access to your paper’s editor. Also, recently a paper went through two different review processes, with two different sets of reviewers each time. We have never seen this done before. Your submission ease or difficulty seems to be dependent on which editor you draw, with education papers a bit easier to get through their process. What is interesting in the submission process is you are allowed to enter names of individuals you do NOT want as an editor or reviewer. Our list is getting longer. Finally, if your paper is accepted it heads off to India. Here they format it for Heliyon and send you a proof with questions. Good luck with this as in the last paper we did, it took 4 email exchanges to change the faculty name of one of the authors. Also, getting the payment into their system and getting acknowledgment is painfully slow. Heliyon loves bureaucracy as does its direct competitor, Sage Open.

The Declaration of Interests tool should always be completed.

The resulting Word document containing your declaration should be uploaded at the “attach/upload files” step in the submission process. It is important that the Word document is saved in the .doc/.docx file format. Author signatures are not required.

We advise you to read our policy on conflict of interest statements, funding source declarations, author agreements/declarations and permission notes

Reference format

This journal uses a numbered reference style (see below). Some guidelines:

  • Author names, journal or book titles, chapter or article titles, year of publication, volume numbers, article numbers or pagination must be included, where applicable.
  • Use of DOIs is recommended.

During proof stage, if required, we will ask you to correct or supply any missing reference data.

Reference style

Indicate references by adding a number within square brackets in line with the text (not superscript). You can refer to author names within your text, but you must always give the reference number, e.g., “as demonstrated [3,6]. Barnaby and Jones [8] obtained a different result ....”.

Number references in the order they appear in your article.
