From January 1 to August 25, Thailand has already hosted 23,096,752 foreign tourists, who collectively spent around 1.08 trillion baht, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. This leaves a colossal 1.2 trillion baht to be generated in the last four months of the year—a tall order by any measure.

Thai SELECT-Food as soft power
Commerce Ministry promotes Thai SELECT restaurants
Sarishti AroraPublished: 16:16, 23 August
2024| Updated: 16:16, 23 August 2024
The Commerce Ministry launched
prototype Thai SELECT restaurants to boost Thailand’s soft
power on a global scale.
Celebrating its 104th anniversary, the ministry hosted the
Driving the Thai Economy with Soft Power exhibition, led by caretaker Commerce
Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, on the forecourt of its building.
Phumtham emphasised the ministry’s dedication to enacting
policies aimed at accelerating economic recovery. These policies are designed
to enhance the well-being of citizens, increase income, reduce expenses,
broaden opportunities, and ensure a balance between consumers, agricultural
producers, and business operators, thus sustaining their
livelihoods and businesses.
Additionally, the ministry highlighted the importance of
Thailand’s soft power in creating employment and generating income. Soft power
is increasingly seen as a critical tool for economic growth, with the government striving
to foster a creative economy that evolves from national identity, local wisdom,
and creativity, and is intertwined with culture and society. This strategy aims
to advance the production of goods and services.
Phumtham stated that the ministry supports this initiative
by organising meetings, seminars, and trade shows to promote Thai soft power.
A press conference on Thursday at the ministry featured a
model displaying local products exemplifying soft power.
In a related move, the ministry is hosting an exhibition of
Thai SELECT restaurants to further promote Thailand’s soft power. The Thai
SELECT certification, granted by the Commerce
Ministry, recognises Thai restaurants and pre-packaged Thai food
products that authentically reflect local wisdom and culture, and use
high-quality raw materials such as Hom Mali fragrant rice and geographical
indication-registered products.
The ministry plans to feature lifestyle products, fashion,
and crafted designs at 1,600 Thai SELECT restaurants worldwide.
Promoting Thai SELECT food as an international soft power is
a significant selling point for the country and contributes to driving the
economy, aligning with government policies, Phumtham said, reported
Bangkok Post.
Thai SMEs eye US e-commerce payday after major Amazon deal
Puntid TantivangphaisalPublished: 16:24, 23 August 2024| Updated: 16:24, 23 August 2024
Thailand’s
small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are set to cash in on
the lucrative US e-commerce market
following a groundbreaking deal inked between the Department of International Trade Promotion
(DITP) and Amazon Global Selling (AGS).
The partnership, formalised during the TOPTHAI
Cross-Border e-Commerce Day 2024, aims to turbocharge the e-commerce export
capabilities of Thai businesses, opening doors to the US$1.1 trillion
(approximately 37 trillion baht) US market.
This collaboration is more than just a handshake—it’s a
strategic move to deepen the understanding of e-commerce exports to the US,
which ranks second globally in revenue. With over 65% of Thailand’s micro,
small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) eyeing the US as their top
e-commerce destination, the timing couldn’t be better.
DITP’s director-general, Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit,
expressed optimism about the alliance.
“We strongly believe that this will help accelerate
Thai businesses’
pace in exporting and reaching global markets such as the US, while also
enhancing the international reputation of Thai products.”
Echoing this sentiment, Anand Palit, head of Amazon
Global Selling for Southeast Asia, underscored the significance of government-industry
collaboration.
“According to research commissioned by Amazon, 95% of the
Thai businesses surveyed agreed that government-industry
collaboration in staging educational conferences and seminars would enhance
their e-commerce export capabilities. This is exactly what we are going to do
with this MoU with DITP.”
The MoU promises to be more than just words on paper. AGS
will hit the road with DITP, participating in roadshows across Thailand to
educate local brands about selling on Amazon’s US platform and navigating
American consumer preferences. Top Thai brands, including Tuff Sport and Wel-B,
are already seeing success, with the collaboration set to spotlight these and
other brands at the TOPTHAI Pavilion in Times Square, New York, this September.
As cross-border e-commerce surges, a study by Access
Partnership reveals that Thai e-commerce exports could skyrocket from 29.5
billion baht to 313.8 billion baht in the next five years, with MSMEs poised to
grab a bigger slice of the pie. However, challenges remain, particularly around
logistics, regulatory compliance, and digital marketing expertise. Thai
businesses are calling for stronger public-private partnerships to navigate
these hurdles.
With the DITP-Amazon partnership, Thai SMEs are ready to
seize the moment and take their products to the world stage, reported The
Nation.
Priority Needs Index (PNI)
The Priority Needs Index (PNI) was not created by Wongwanich and Wiratchai (2005), but rather, it was developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the 1990s. The PNI was originally developed as a tool to identify and prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations in developing countries.
The
UNDP's PNI methodology was later adapted and modified for use in Thailand,
where it has been widely applied to identify areas of priority for development.
Wongwanich and Wiratchai (2005) were among the first researchers to apply the
PNI methodology in Thailand and to modify it to better suit the Thai context.
Therefore,
while Wongwanich and Wiratchai (2005) were not the creators of the PNI, their
work was important in adapting and refining the methodology for use in
Thailand. Since their original publication, the PNI modified has been widely
used in Thailand to identify areas of priority for development, and it
continues to be an important tool for development planning and resource
allocation.
To the
best of my knowledge, the original source for the PNI methodology developed by
the UNDP is the report entitled "A User's Guide to Measuring Human
Development: The Human Development Index and Related Indicators" by Mahbub
ul Haq, which was published in 1995.
